Veganuary – Let’s Talk Vegan

In 2021 more than 500K people took the pledge to try and go Vegan throughout the month of January. Both good for you and the planet, it’s a dietary and lifestyle change that benefits all!

Often defined by the phrase “we don’t eat meat” there is so much more to being a vegan then just what’s on your plate. Of course cutting meat, eggs & dairy out of your diet is the biggest change for anyone giving it a try, however there are other animal ingredients hidden away that often get overlooked, such as fish scales in make-up and animal derivatives in clothing, shoes and bags.

How far you “Go Vegan” is entirely up to you and it’s not as hard as you’d think to eat well, with plenty of meal options available both to buy in the supermarket and order in restaurants. In fact most of the weekly shop staples are already vegan so the change isn’t as big as you’d think. Here’s just a few things which you probably already know and a love:

  • Fruit Juice, Tea and Coffee
  • Plenty of Biscuits, Crackers and Crisps
  • Baked Beans, Chopped Tomatoes, Dried Pasta and Rice
  • Almost All Bread
  • Oven Chips and Hash Browns
  • Breakfast Cereals
  • Coconut Milk
  • Herbs, Spices, Tomato Ketchup and HP Sauce
  • Peanut Butter, Yeast Extracts, Jams and Marmalades
  • Mustard, Pickles, Olive Oil and Vegetable Oils, Soy Sauce
  • and of course Fruit and Vegetables in all its forms – fresh, dried, tinned and frozen!

As for the rest, there’s now vegan versions of almost everything so switching like-for-like is easy! In truth there’s no real excuse for not giving it a try, even if it is just for January.

Many of our venues here at Relish offer a small selection of vegan options on their menus – or the opportunity to make a dish vegan by swapping out a couple of ingredients. Our chefs are passionate about working with fresh, locally sourced ingredients and are always in tune with the latest food trends, applying these in a commercial way when designing their menus. We’re sure you’ll agree the options are worth trying!
