Celebrating British Sandwich Week

Let’s face it, we’re all rather bored of our homemade sandwiches which over the year have morphed from opulent fillings captured between slices of home-baked organic bread, to the humble, sliced (slightly out of date) loaf ends, featuring a single slice of processed meat and obligatory lettuce leaf.

After a year of making our own lunches, it’s time to celebrate moving into step 3 of Boris’ Road Map by treating ourselves to a lunch that celebrates all things British, whilst also indulging in the enjoyment of visiting cafes, pubs and delis for that professional lunchtime creation!

This week, we celebrate British Sandwich Week (16th – 22nd May). Organised by The British Sandwich & Food to Go Association, the trade body established in 1990 to represent the interests of all those businesses involved with the ‘food on the move’ industry, the national celebration salutes the humble sandwich in all its glory as well as the contribution that the sandwich industry makes to the economy.

A nationwide survey has shown that the BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomato) is officially the UK’s most popular sandwich for the second year running.

Data analysed by the organisers of British Sandwich Week has revealed however that The Club sandwich is Britain’s most Googled sandwich for 2020/2021. A classic combination of bacon and chicken (or turkey) with tomato, green salad and mayo, it certainly delivers on taste, which perhaps explains its continued popularity.

The top five most Googled sandwiches in the UK, also prove that Brits are in search of comfort food when it comes to their sarnies. The Club sandwich was closely followed by The Reuben and the classic Bacon Butty, with Grilled Cheese and Fish Finger sandwiches making the top 5.

Each of our venues across the Cotswolds offers their own version of the great British sandwich, albeit burger style, open sandwich style, deli-style or quite simply, traditional style! Try it in a ciabatta, on sourdough bread, as a toastie, in a brioche bun or seeded bap – oh and we do of course also offer gluten-free options!

One thing you can be sure of however is that we rarely offer anything obvious in our fillings. From Chapel and Swan Oak Smoked Salmon to Avocado and Ancho Chilli Flakes; a Kentucky Clucky Chicken & Gooey Cheese Burger to a Croque Monsieur – you’ll need to visit each of our venues to get the full benefit of our Relish Sandwiches!!
