National Picnic Week

From the 18th to the 26th of June 2022, let Relish help you celebrate National Picnic Week.

Picnicking is one of the most delightful summer traditions, and here in the Cotswolds, it’s a terrific opportunity to use the stunning open spaces during the summer months. Then, when the sun comes out (which is less often than a lot of us might like), we can finally enjoy it.

During National Picnic Week, why not gather your favourite foods and head out into the Cotswold countryside for a relaxing afternoon. So dig out those picnic hampers and blankets and get planning this June.

What is National Picnic Week?

National Picnic Week began a decade ago and has only increased in popularity. The goal is to get as many people as possible to enjoy the countryside. Not only are picnics a lovely way to meet up with loved ones for a bite to eat in the great outdoors, but they are also an excellent opportunity to try a taste of something new and exciting.

This outdoor dining style is fun for people of all ages and a fantastic way to bring the entire family together. Here are a few of our finest picnic tips.

Keep it simple:

Choose foods to serve all at the same time. The fun of a picnic is spreading all the food on the blanket or picnic table; everyone enjoys helping themselves.

Put together your best picnic with our simple ordering system. Choose from a list of all-time favourite dishes to enjoy al fresco, from summer salads and sandwiches to quiches, pastries, and desserts.

Prepare well

If you’re going off the beaten path, there aren’t going to be many supplies available, and remember, this is England, and the weather can change at any time!

Don’t forget to bring utensils and crockery. You don’t want to arrive at your picnic spot only to discover you’ve forgotten a sharp knife to cut the bread or a spoon to serve the potato salad.

Fun and games

Being outside for this type of dining can be a novelty, so gather some fun, entertaining picnic games and activities to keep everyone entertained as they enjoy their time in the sun. The alternatives for entertaining your guests are endless, from bubbles to ballgames, bingo, to beer tasting.

Choose your spot

The Cotswolds offers breathtaking picnic spots with rolling hills, open skies, rivers, and an abundance of open gardens and parks.

We’ve included some of the best picnic spots to visit in the Cotswolds this summer. Our particular favourites are:

  • Cotswold Water Park, Cirencester.

The Gateway Cafe & Information Point are open year-round. So if you’re looking for waterscapes and wildlife, then this is an ideal spot.

  • Bathurst Estate, Cirencester.

Originally intended as a deer park by the first Earl Bathurst in the 1700s. Great for quintessential Downton-style picnicking.

  • Abbey Park, Cirencester.

Initially, part of the abbey buildings, the open grounds, lake, wildfowl, trees, and leafy vista form an impressive base for your picnic.

  • The River Windrush, Bourton-on-the-Water.

Pick a quiet position under a tree and relax while dipping your toes into the soothing waters of the clear, shallow river that runs through the heart of this picturesque Cotswold village.

  • Westonbirt Arbouretum, Tetbury.

Discover 600 acres of the Cotswolds and a picnic area with benches and tables among the 15,000 shrubs and trees from around the world.

Make it stress-free:

Easy ordering via our online ordering shop. We offer a great range of delicious picnic food options for al fresco feasting, corporate breakfast events, lunch parties, weddings, special occasions, or just the perfect Saturday.

Enjoy your picnic, whether it’s for the scenery, the sense of being in the outdoors, the connection to nature, or just the food you eat outdoors.

Finally, please leave the picnic area in the same state as you found it. Shake those last few crumbs off the blanket, and no one will know you were there.
